From fundraising in the nonprofit sector to leading philanthropic giving initiatives in the credit union space, Rafael holds knowledge that is centered on nonprofit engagement and credit union philanthropy. In addition to Rafael's community and philanthropic work, his degrees in Healthcare Leadership and Community Planning from the University of Washington have provided a foundation to engage diverse communities and stakeholders across various sectors. Rafael strongly believes that credit unions can serve as catalysts for community and social impact, which has resulted in him working for two of the largest credit unions in Washington and earning a Credit Union Development Educator designation from the National Credit Union Foundation. Rafael currently helps lead BECU’s philanthropic giving initiatives and nonprofit engagement. Rafael also serves as Co-Chair of BECU’s Latinx Employee Resource Group due to his passion for inclusion and uplifting his Latinx culture. Outside of his professional work, Rafael enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and volunteering in his local community. Rafael currently serves as a Board Director of the Seattle Southside’s Success Foundation and the Tacoma Community College Foundation. He has previously served on the City of Tacoma’s Immigrant and Refugee Affairs Commission and as Board President of the Tacoma Public Library Foundation. Philanthropy, community building, and financial cooperatives excite Rafael the most, and he is grateful for the privilege of living out his passions through his work every day.
