Boscombe Down

PM for a £200M bid into the UN for a unmanned air vehicle service. I was responsible for generating the Project Management Plan and Gantt chart and worked closely with the other specialists in the team to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach. There were some very large supplier contracts included where I worked closely with the procurement and technical specialists to manage some very complex requirements. The project scope included the installation/setup of the service and running for several years in a very challenging geographical environment. We delivered a highly professional bid through numerous rigorous design reviews, signed off at board level, on time to the UN as a result.

Qinetiq Farnborough

The role demanded regular 2 way briefings with directors and senior managers to understand the business strategies and thereby define the company IT strategy. Initiation and prioritisation of IS projects through definition of robust, value based business cases sponsored by key business stakeholders was an important part of the role. I set the monthly priorities for the BRM team and defined the governance structure under which the team operated.To help with the transition of the organisation's IT support from an outsourced to in-house model, I was responsible for ensuring that the IT department was delivering the projects and services that met the needs of the business. It also included assisting with the introduction of a new Windows 7 desktop environment including a virtual desktop system. This required holding numerous presentations and Q&A sessions throughout the business to ensure successful adoption.I was also given the responsibility of upgrading the organisation’s Video Conferencing infrastructure. This required working with representatives from all levels of the business and liaising with suppliers to define the requirements and appropriate solutions. Defining and justifying the business case for the investment was the greatest challenge and involved several solution iterations and working closely with the finance community to get to an appropriate, affordable solution.

My technical background is as a software engineer and team leader for several diverse software projects. The most significant role was as Deputy Team Leader for a team of 14 developers delivering the software for a £20m national police website. I was responsible for inspiring and motivating staff to work very long hours for many months to ensure successful project completion. Another part of the role involved designing and developing large sections of the functionality, including the integration of a highly complex content management system.I have also acted as technical lead for a number of research projects, communicating the results of the research in the form of reports, presentations and software demonstrations to senior military customers.
