I worked under the supervision of Prof. EJ Millner-Gulland and Hollie Booth, Ph.D., at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science (ICCS) at the Zoology Department, University of Oxford. The goal of the placement was to produce a scientific paper focusing on a community-based approach to conserving endangered sharks in Indonesia. I also joined relevant courses at the University, such as data science and policy analysis, and learned various case studies of conservation solutions from current students and post-docs conducting research at the ICCS.

The project combined fisheries surveys, satellite tagging analysis, citizen science, and interviews to identify (a) drivers behind the decline of the thresher shark population, (b) critical habitat, movement, and aggregation sites, and (c) understand demands on thresher sharks from fishing communities in Alor and raise community awareness about thresher shark conservation.

Raja Ampat, West Papua

I conducted ecological research on reef and oceanic manta rays within the Raja Ampat Marine Protected Area (MPA) network. I employed several research approaches, including photo identification, satellite, and acoustic telemetry studies. I also developed materials and trained Indigenous youth groups of Raja Ampat to monitor tourism activities in over-crowded manta diving sites.

Facilitated the learnings of 17 youth delegates from 10 Southeast Asian countries in marine science, project design, and outreach. The project was funded by the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and USAID in the Philippines.
