I am the founder and director of The Queer Muslim Project (TQMP), Asia’s leading digital and cultural platform for Queer, Muslim and diverse voices, with a global community of over 70,000 people. In 2020, I represented India on the Generation Equality Global Youth Task Force set up by UN Women to strengthen gender-responsive action and achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. In 2017, I ran a popular online writing campaign called ‘Write For Pride’ in an effort to amplify the voices of young LGBTQIA+ individuals in Indian cities, which was recognised among the top campaigns of 2017 on the leading youth portal, Youth Ki Awaaz.I am a 2018 Acumen India Fellow, a 2020 Swedish Institute Leader Lab Fellow, a 2022 Cross Culture Programme Germany Fellow. Founder, DirectorThe Queer Muslim Project Mar 2017 - PresentNew Delhi Area, IndiaThe Queer Muslim Project is an award winning cultural platform and Asia’s leading digital network for queer, Muslim and diverse voices, with a growing global community of over 70,000 people. We use art, culture and media to challenge harmful stereotypes and norms, build power and visibility of underrepresented LGBTQIA+ artists and storytellers, and enable them to shape their own narratives. Our vision is to establish a creative pipeline for queer artists, storytellers, writers and organisers from underrepresented communities to take up transformative leadership roles everywhere that content is created: films, television, media, publishing, and social change movement building. We are the lead curator for British Council’s Five Films For Freedom program in India. In 2022, we delivered an international poetry residency as part of British Council’s India/UK Together Season of Culture program - Language is a Queer Thing - featuring 6 diverse Queer spoken word poets from India and the UK, with showcases at major festivals like BBC Contains Strong Language in Birmingham and Tata Literature Live in Mumbai. Our current programs include The Queer Writers’ Room, a creative writing and narrative change program for young South Asian writers in the age group 18-25, supported by the U.S. Consulate General Mumbai. In 2020, we partnered with Instagram to produce ‘Safe and Strong: An LGBTQIA+ Guide to Facebook and Instagram’. Together with the British Council and Instagram, we hosted two editions of our Digital Pride Festival in June 2020 and 2021, focused on celebrating and platforming LGBTQIA+ artists and creators in South Asia. As part of our strategic efforts to combat religious extremism in South & South East Asia, we continue to organise the Interfaith Preconference at the ILGA Asia Conference, in collaboration with GIN-SSOGIE - the recent one being held in Ho Chi Minh City in November 2022. -

Founder, Community CoordinatorDelhi University Queer Collective Jan 2014 - May 2018In January 2014, I founded the Delhi University Queer Collective (DUQC), the first ever LGBTQ support group on Delhi University campus. Today, the collective has grown enormously as a movement – with membership in various undergraduate colleges in Delhi – and has brought about a major shift in the way LGBTQI rights is viewed in higher educational spaces in India. In April 2015, I launched ‘Zero Tolerance’, a campaign calling for an end to the violence directed against LGBTQ students and faculty members. It allowed me to channelize my own anxieties, fear and my resolve to raise awareness of campus homophobia despite the existence of a homophobic law, Section 377. I was featured by CNN IBN, a national news broadcaster that partners with Cable News Network, as a Citizen Journalist campaigning for a safe campus for LGBTQ students and teachers. The campaign gradually enabled more people to speak up against homophobic violence in Delhi colleges.I also facilitated the first ever Parents Support Meeting at the National Capital of Delhi and created a safe space, where parents and relatives of LGBTQ individuals shared deeply moving and powerful stories of love, acceptance and unflinching hope against social odds. This event was hugely successful, leading to subsequent editions, and the mobilization of culturally specific resources and tool-kits for parents and families of Indian LGBTQ individuals.
