Postdoctoral Fellow
Graduate Research Associate
Ph.D. Graduate ResearchDecreasing Bladed Disk Response with Dampers on a Few BladesAdvisor - Dr. Marc P. MignoletDeveloped an optimization strategy for the optimum placement of a limited number of dampers (fewer than the number of blades) on a bladed disk to reduce the forced response of blade vibrations. Designed dedicated algorithms using physics-based arguments for optimum damper placement which overcame challenges such as the combinatorial nature of the problem and the large number of local minima present. This resulted in a decrease in computational time by a factor of 100 while maintaining the high level of accuracy required for the analysis.Key achievements:+ Implemented CMS based reduced-order modeling of bladed disks with capability to introduce mistuning.+ Formulated algorithms in a probabilistic setting allowing inclusion of variability of dampers, probability of damper failure, and unintentional variation of blade properties (random mistuning).+ Applied Monte Carlo simulation methods to predict probabilistic response and verify solution robustness.+ Validated the developed algorithms against an exhaustive search of the design space on simple (single-degree-of-freedom) as well as full scale academic and industrial finite element bladed disk models.+ Developed MATLAB code with capability for large-scale parallelization on a computing cluster.
Graduate Research Assistant
M.S. Graduate ResearchNonparametric Stochastic Modeling of Uncertainty in RotordynamicsAdvisor - Dr. Marc P. MignoletDeveloped a systematic approach for the consideration of uncertainty in rotordynamic systems. Introduced methods for consistent consideration of uncertainty in related rotor mass properties (mass and gyroscopic matrices, and unbalance of the rotor). Predicted probability distribution functions for various rotor properties such as natural frequencies, damping, mode shape deviation, forced response magnitude, and whirl/whip speeds arising from the inclusion of uncertainty.Key achievements:+ Developed reduced-order models for axially symmetric and asymmetric rotors considering both symmetric and asymmetric bearing configurations.+ Introduced uncertainty in rotor stiffness and mass properties, and bearing coefficients utilizing the novel Nonparametric Stochastic Modeling technique.+ Applied Monte Carlo simulation methods to predict probability distribution functions for rotor natural frequencies, damping, and mode shape deviations.+ Assessed the amplification of forced unbalanced response and change in rotor whirl/whip speeds due to inclusion of uncertainty.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Taught an undergraduate junior level Dynamic Systems and Measurements Laboratory.Responsibilities:+ Taught students to use MATLAB for State-Space analyses, Discrete Fourier Transforms, and PID controller design.+ Introduced students to NI DAQ hardware and LabVIEW software for data acquisition.+ Instructed students in the use and calibration of thermocouples and load cells.+ Developed grading rubrics for and graded weekly laboratory reports.
Undergraduate Researcher
B.Tech. Undergraduate ResearchPrediction of Surface Roughness in Face Milling and Optimization Using Genetic AlgorithmsAdvisor - Dr. Shrikanth S. RaoFormulated a regression model for predicting the surface roughness in a face milling operation. Implemented an optimization strategy to minimize surface roughness using Genetic Algorithms. Recommended ranges of tool feed, cutting speed and depth of cut for minimum surface roughness based on the results of the optimization.Key achievements:+ Implemented a fractional factorial experimental design to study the effects of tool feed, cutting speed, and depth of cut on surface roughness in face milling operation.+ Measured dynamic cutting forces during milling operation to extend optimization strategy for minimum tool wear and maximum process efficiency.
