I joined Abnormal Security, a Cybersecurity company that protects enterprise businesses from email-based cyber attacks. I transitioned into a leadership role and joined the group at Shopify that focuses on Search & Recommendation experience of buyers and merchants. I lead a team of engineers that build and scale the infrastructure powering search across millions of e-commerce websites running Shopify's platform.- Led a geographically distributed team of engineers into building a streaming data pipeline platform (Kotlin/Java, Apache Beam, Google Dataflow, Google Bigtable, Kafka) that ingests data into Shopify’s merchandising search index (Elasticsearch), powering search on millions of online stores. The system was successful in increasing search revenue by 19% and cut down total time to rebuild the search index from days to hours.- Built tooling for the engineers and data scientists working on the platform, implemented Zero Downtime CI / CD, and a 24/7 on-call rotation.- Sourced engineers from diverse backgrounds and skillsets to staff the team after a re-org. Coached junior developers to grow their craft and promoted them to senior roles by giving them opportunity to level up.- Built strategic partnership with product management and data science teams to identify technical challenges in problem space and launched projects.

Key achievements - Built 1P Shopify app that allowed merchants to connect their Shopify store with Facebook and advertise their product, with Ruby-on-Rails, React, GraphQL, MySQL, Redis.- 10X scaled Shopify's internal service for syncing product catalog with Facebook by re-architecting it as an event-driven system based on Apache Kafka and removing the sole MySQL database as bottleneck. - Built the back-end for Instagram Checkout, an experience that lets merchants receive orders originated from Instagram and process them in Shopify back-off, Built with Ruby-on-Rails, MySQL, Redis, Kafka

I moved to Halifax, Canada and took a remote senior software engineering position at XapoBank, a Fintech company that offers products for managing crypto and fiat currencies. I built data infrastructure and APIs (Python, MySQL, Redis, Docker and AWS) that calculate prices and exchange rates of currencies. I was picked in the remote team responsible for building NewsCred API, a REST-like HTTP service designed to be highly available and handle large volume of traffic, using Django, MySQL and Apache Solr on Amazon EC2. Collaborated remotely with engineers in New York City through JIRA, GitHub, and Hipchat and reported to the co- founder and chief architect of the company. Some of my key achievements were:- Scaled NewsCred Platform, a system designed to aggregate and curate news from thousands of data sources, from a single node system to a distribute one, using Celery, RabbitMQ, Amazon S3, MySQL and MongoDB. - Increased throughput of NewsCred API by analysing incoming traffic and re- architecting back-end infrastructure.- Sped up the system responsible for extraction ‘topics’ from text by rewriting the Solr Search Component in Java.
