Between 2011-2023, I was a member of and eventually rebuilt, revitalized and led a distinguished team of impact investors at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, investing in innovations and scaling high-impact policy and technology innovations in higher education to eradicate and close opportunity gaps for low-income students and students of color. We partnered with exceptional colleagues and organizations (of all tax statuses) to digitally transform colleges and universities with high-quality digital learning, structural and systemic evidence-based policy reforms, technology-enabled advising and student supports, emergency aid, and data and AI-enabled predictive analytics and infrastructure. Before joining the foundation, I helped scale several education technology organizations created by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York City. These organizations, such as JSTOR, Aluka, and ITHAKA, dramatically transformed digital access to high-quality scholarly research and knowledge across the globe by enabling digital distribution. I also led a public/private partnership to digitize rare, medieval primary sources from private collections in Africa, Asia, North America, and Europe. I am passionate about social impact, innovation, impact investing, entrepreneurship, and the integral role advanced technologies play in reforming and revolutionizing education access and success. At AQL Labs, I am building a technology focused social venture to build education’s intelligent future and assist adult learners and the global postsecondary / skilling sector dramatically improve access, success, and productivity.
