I was and continue to be a huge science fiction nerd. Star Wars (ep. IV-VI) was the first film that really opened up my mind to imagining the future. Seeing Luke Skywalker lose his hand by his own father and then get a new bionic hand in what seemed like a matter of days was amazing. With a physician for a dad, I always appreciated the direct impact medicine made on peoples' lives. Yet, I wanted to do something different and help create technology that could have that same positive impact, but on a broader scale. In high school I first read about a monkey controlling a robotic arm through electrodes implanted in its motor cortex at Duke. I quickly realized that the possibility of machine and man was no longer purely in the realm of science fiction. This new field could be a way to mix my interests in motor control, technology, and medicine into one career path.The fascination with this new field led me to pursue a B.S. and subsequently a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. Over time my interest in understanding motor control evolved into a desire to apply this knowledge to solving issues facing those with upper limb pathologies, specifically to help upper limb amputees. Today, I'm so very fortunate to run a small medical device company with some of the brightest and most hard-working people I know. We are working hard everyday to improve the lives of amputees through the advancement and commercialization of new technology. We are just getting started and I can't wait to show you what's coming next.
