I am an attorney who specialises in technology, media and telecommunications law in India. Over my career I have advised on some of the largest technology and telecom transactions in the country and am equally at ease advising on corporate matters as well as transactional and regulatory matters. I have advised on cross border M&A, technology transfers, outsourcing, data protection, intellectual property, private equity investments and a range of specialised technology mandates. I particularly enjoy advising on the intersection of law and technology because I understand both equally well and find that I can apply one to the other to good effect. Of late I have been getting more deeply involved in policy matters relating to all sorts of technology regulations - from data protection to telecom sector reform, mapping and digital public infrastructure. During India’s G20 Presidency I served as the DPI Advisor to the Ministry of Finance. In 2000, I along with a few others, founded a law firm called Trilegal that has grown to become one of the leading law firms in the country. Trilegal is a full service firm with four offices in the principal commercial regions of the country. It has a strong culture of merit-based growth and a deep commitment to providing clients quality advice. I currently lead the TMT practice in Trilegal and after serving on the management committee of the firm from its inception stepped down from management in April 2020 to join its board. I wrote a book called "The Law Relating to Computers and the Internet" that was published by Butterworths in 2000. My second book, Privacy 3.0 - Unlocking our Data Driven Future addresses the challenges of regulating privacy in a big data world. My latest book - The Third Way: India’s Revolutionary Approach to Data Governance - describes how India’s Digital Public Infrastructure has pioneered a new techno-legal approach to data governance. I have, since 2016, written a weekly column called Ex Machina on the intersection of law, technology and society and have a podcast under the same name.
