About Paul L. Rainey, Phd

One semester as a graduate student, I landed a role as a mock interviewer at my university's career office. This experience altered the course of my career—something I later discovered was explained by John Krumboltz's Happenstance Theory. It propelled me into a 10+ year journey in university career services, where I now specialize in guiding graduate students and early career talent to create their own paths.Throughout this journey, I've cultivated three interrelated categories of career services work that have led to high impact: ✔ 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴: With 3000+ hours of direct contact experience, I have cultivated an advising practice that combines career theory, counseling micro-skills, and up-to-date knowledge of hiring practices. My approach to programming follows an instructional design perspective, creating both concise workshops and comprehensive programs leading to actionable learning outcomes. ✔ 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: I achieved a successful turnaround for a comprehensive university's career office through developing workstreams, implementing effective marketing campaigns, and bridging the gap between stakeholders to align the mission with the university's vision. Using a systems approach rooted in organizational theory, I design structures and streamline processes aimed at exceeding goals.✔ 𝗣𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: I've fostered strong employer relationships through a white glove approach, resulting in increased employer participation at career fairs, connections with local and international employers, and effective career matching for students. I believe the key to success lies in understanding students, employer needs, and building bridges between them. ► 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭, 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘛𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘴 𝘈&𝘔'𝘴 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴, 𝘭𝘦𝘵'𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵!
