My major interest is in helping Western pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies establish key relationships in the developing world, especially India, as well as maintaining and optimizing existing relationships. I firmly believe that for all parties, the outcomes from these relationships can be more than the sum of the parts. This belief comes from my 30+ years experience in Western and Indian companies, in applied chemistry, biotechnology, industrial chemistry and management of industrial projects. This experience gives me a unique perspective and a key set of tools to forge and maintain international drug discovery and development relationships. My intense interest in this area is best illustrated by my recent work for the International Consortium on Anti-Virals (ICAV), a not-for-profit drug development organization based in Ontario, Canada. A fundamental aspect of ICAV’s mission is to grow an international network of biomedical investigators and drug development resources in order to fulfill the organization’s main objective of providing the poorest of developing countries with affordable and effective medicines to treat viral diseases, such as HIV, dengue, and chikunguya. I was tasked with bringing together the necessary leaders from across multiple governmental and industrial organizations within India to establish ICAV-India as a functional “sister” organization to ICAV. As a result, ICAV-India has been successfully launched and Indian institutes and drug companies have signed 10 MOUs with ICAV under the auspices of ICAV-India to a level where the Government of India and the Government of Canada are evaluating funding ICAV-India at the multimillion dollar level to support long-term drug development collaborations.
