About Raju Ram

Raju Ram is a trained computational scientist with expertise in developing scalable algorithms on parallel machines. He is currently working on Computer vision algorithms (e.g. calibration) at Robert Bosch GmbH . He was a Computer Science Ph.D. student at the HPC competence center at Fraunhofer ITWM in Germany. In this PhD research, he has developed parallel preconditioners to solve extreme, large-scale linear systems in CFD and FEM simulations. He was one of the main developers of the linear solver library GaspiLS (http://www.gaspils.de/). In Deep learning, he has scaled the hyperparameter optimization of deep neural networks, which drastically reduces the time to train millions of model parameters for the ResNet32 network on the CIFAR-10 dataset. He holds an Erasmus Mundus joint master's degree in Computer Simulation of Science and Engineering and a Bachelors's in Mathematics and Computing.     In my Ph.D. research, I developed multilevel ILU-based asynchronous and scalable parallel preconditioners in a linear solver library GaspiLS, to solve very large-scale linear systems in simulations. It exploits GASPI based distributed memory parallelism using the Restrictive Additive Schwarz (RAS) method. At the shared memory level, it exploits parallelism with a multilevel nested dissection(MLND) approach. Initial experiments for the convection-diffusion problem show 83% parallel efficiency of RAS preconditioner on 64 processes and 50% parallel efficiency MLND-based approaches, using 64 GASPI processes, each having 20 cores. In Deep learning, I have optimized the Cholesky decomposition in the underlying Hyperparameter Optimization problem using lazy Gaussian Processes. It has improved the run-time by a factor of 15 for MNIST dataset on LeNet5 and 3 for CIFR-10 dataset on RestNet32. I have presented this research at Supercomputing Conference 2019 in Denver, Colorado.

    In my master thesis project, I have developed a parallel deflation-based preconditioner to solve large-scale linear systems of equations arising from Groundwater flow equations. It has reduced the run time of the Dutch water management model called Netherlands Hydrological Instrument by 4x on more than 100 MPI processes.
