The powerful statistics surrounding schoolexclusions released by The Department for Education found that 49% of school exclusions take place before children have completed Year 8 (age 12). The Oppidan Foundation (OF) focuses on peer-mentoring that was developed following its research and pilot programmes in maintained secondary schools and sixth forms over the past years. The foundation’s primary focus is supporting at-risk young people within maintained secondary schools across the UK through peer-mentoring and training programmes. The seven qualities constituting the D7 system are based on how high performers succeed and the system governs the structure of these programmes.The programmes run for 1 year in multiple phases to ensure systemic change and support for these students. The first phase is a six-week mentor-training programme for students in Year 12 who will progress to become peer-mentors for at-risk Year 7 or 8 students in their school. This first phase sees OF mentors work with two Year 12 students for 1 hour a week, over 6 consecutive weeks. The impact estimation using GCMs was targeted mainly at this phase of the interventional programmes for multiple schools in the UK.Four schools from London and one from Coventry were taken into consideration with the total number of students being 91. Surveys were carefully designed with the Oppidan Foundation in close collaboration with its Director. Their belief has been that taking part in the programme increases D7 qualities in students and having the opportunity to engage with a mentor allows the individual space to develop and reflect on personal qualities that they want to improve.It was concluded that the enrollment of students into the six-week mentor training programme of the Oppidan Foundation has a strong and clear positive causal impact of almost 20% on an average on their D7 qualities.
