ManagerThe Samples Nov 2001 - Jun 2003The Samples are a rock band formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1987 - affectionately known as - "The Best Band You've Never Heard". Their name came from the members' early sustenance living off of food samples from the local grocery store. The music has been described as "reggae-influenced rock/pop" - a cross between The Police and the Grateful Dead. To date, they have recorded and released 27 different albums.Attending the University of Colorado, The Samples quickly became the soundtrack of my life as I witnessed their meteoric rise from playing at local college bars to landing a recording contract with Arista Records and becoming a nationally touring band. Over the years their opening bands have included: Dave Matthews, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Hootie and the Blow Fish, and Lisa Loeb. But in 2001 things came crashing down with 9/11 and the aftermath of that catastrophic event. When the world stopped and venues shuttered their doors, the band was out touring and placed in a very challenging financial position. With no new revenues coming in and the list of creditors banging on their door escalating every day, after a 12-year run, the band disbanded.In conversation with the band's lead singer Sean Kelly about producing an acoustic DVD project, after 9/11 those discussions quickly escalated. What started as an unconditional friendship to help with both personal as well as business challenges, I slowly helped get him out playing music and touring the country again. It was at that point I was asked to become his Manager. Our first project was to launch the "Lifetime Pass", a fan-focused initiative to raise money - the precursor to a Kickstarter campaign. With the generosity and support of their fan base, the creditors got paid, Sean was back on the road touring again as an acoustic act, and the DVD "Seventeen" was born. From there a full band was put together and The Samples were back out crisscrossing the country playing at venues and delighting their fanbase again.
