With my wife Olga and casuals, we keep busy with a bunch of good stuff: * My Europe Base is a fresh way to enjoy Europe, staying riverside in Zell-Mosel (Rhineland Germany), great for wine, cycling, hiking, touring; * Outbike runs supported cycle rides of Outback tracks, rail trails and Europe. Our 'flag rides' are the 30 day 2200km 'Gulf 2 Gulf' across Australia from Pt Augusta to Karumba via Birdsville, first run in 2005, next 2024 - and the Tour du Front, 23 days riding the WW1 Western Front (ran in 2016 and 18);* Casual tour driver-guide and coach driver;* Occasional chess coach.PS The memorial tablet in the thumbnail image is by the sea in Torquay Victoria. It commemorates the first flight of Bass Strait on 17 Dec 1919 - by WW1 veteran Lt Arthur Long - who in 1926 married my 18 year old 2nd cousin Beatrice Fischer. His airline, Aviation Limited, predated Qantas but only lasted 18 months in 1920-21, failing to attract a postal contract (Qantas did). However the much celebrated Long marriage of Arthur and Beatrice proved rather short. Beatrice became a journalist and theatre actress. In 1929, flying enroute from New York to Berlin by Zeppelin, Beatrice was dispatched from the airship mid-Atlantic, at night, repeatedly, before it crashed into the sea, acting in 'The Zeppelin Terror', a comedy-murder-mystery-disaster play (the first production by Gladys Moncrieff) at Melbourne's Palace Theatre (demolished May 2020). About 1930, in the dark days of the Depression, her family quit their mansion in Queen Street for plots in the NSW Riverina, settling around Narrandera and Boree Creek (she happily remarried). I never met my second-cousin Beatrice or her siblings but in recent years I had the pleasure of meeting her much-accomplished and train-enthusiast nephew (the late) Tim Fischer on several occasions and more recently, Tim's sister Vicki, sharing some fascinating family history!
