I became Chairman of the Board after many years as a volunteer director of Sarina Aged Care Ltd, a not-for-profit residential aged care and independent living unit provider, We had built a very solid reputation for delivering high quality residential aged care and independant living unit services to the community surrounding Sarina. We were also in an enviably strong financial position.However, I became Chairman to oversee the orderly and prudent transfer of ownership to a larger entity which would be able to guarantee continuity of tenure for residents and staff and give peace of mind to residents families and the community at large. We engaged an expert industry consultant to assist the rigorus search for an appropriate not for profit entity that could meet the nine non-negotiable guarantees which our board had established. Ozcare assumed ownership lock, stock and barrel 1st July 2023. We are now in the process of winding up our company. Why did we do this? Quite simply, despite or because of the considerable talent and individual expertise of our volunteer directors, we recognised that the days of volunteer boards is coming to a close, particularly for small providers in aged care.

Mackay Hospital

Mackay Hospital is an accredited teaching hospital. The Medical Education Unit is a highly performing team overseeing the transition from medical student to junior doctor and progression from limited to general registration. We work closely with senior clinicians to provide an ever evolving framework of formal and work based education, training, assessment and feedback to trainees. Activities are rigorously evaluated for relevance and quality of outcome.We assist doctors with overseas qualifications prepare for the Australian Medical Council Clinical Exam.Mackay Hospital Medical Education Unit has received advice from Post Graduate Medical Education Council Queensland’s 2013 General Accreditation Survey, that “The educational experience and opportunities for intern training in the Mackay Hospital and Health service is of a superior quality. The Health Service offers a true generalist experience for interns with the innovative use of medical education registrars in several of the clinical units enhancing the teaching and learning opportunities. The appointment and retention of permanent senior medical staff is indicative of a maturing culture of the Health Service as a centre of excellence in delivery of medical training.”MEU has achieved accreditation for Intern placement into new terms in Cardiology, Radiology, Reproductive Health, Bowen Hospital and Mackay Mater Hospital and expanded placements in Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Child and Adolescent Health to accommodate the doubling of Intern numbers over the last four years. MEU has supported recruitment and retention through improvements in education, training and pathways so that Intern intake is now 100% Australian trained and 100% of current Interns have applied to remain for 2014. Placement of medical students has increased annually and now stands at approx 70 at Mackay Hospital and 120 at rural sites compared to 5 and 26 respectively in 2009

This means we work with not-for-profit organisations to address community needs and leverege our funds with business, corporate and government partnerships. We seek to strengthen our community by increasing participation, volunteerism, networking, organisational and individual capacity, personal safety and well-being, and environmental sustainability.

Glenden

Glenden State School extends from Prep to Year Twelve. It has an excellent academic standard in National testing and a highly committed staff. The township exists to support the nearby Newlands mine. In twelve brief months, I initiated networking with external agencies to provide a holistic program of support to successfully address a number of bullying issues, expanded in class support for teachers of students with identified needs, expanded the curriculum in the secondary school, established a mentoring program for senior students to assist them to qualify for the newly introduced Queensland Certificate of Education, introduced a whole of school/community behaviour management program and oversaw literacy, science and reporting systemic initiatives. I personally supervised the beginning teacher support program and placed high priority on screening and selecting high quality staff for appointment. Working closely with the P&C, we initiated the development of a master plan for grounds development, removed unsuitable and dangerous trees and reclaimed overgrown playground area. It was essential to conduct a WHS audit of buildings and grounds due to unstable soil and we developed priorities for maintenance and enhancement of facilities. We began an eradication program for burrs and bindii-eyes which had overtaken much of the play areas.Being principal is as much about learning from others as leading and it is essential to always be listening to students, staff and community.My style is to draw on the strengths of staff, delegate appropriately and to act as a facilitator tapping into expertise and services where required.
