Currently focused on developing OSH and fire risk management strategies for SME construction and property refurbishment operators in anticipation of the raft of new Grenfell-related building safety regulations that will hopefully start coming through as we escape Covid. I have a special interest in applying academic enterprise risk management theory to SME construction firms, with a focus on the improved educational delivery of the building safety knowledge such firms will need to embrace to carry out their work competently in future. It is an interesting problem. We have an urgent need to improve building safety standards that will involve the adoption of advanced technical knowledge by a group of workers who are renowned for being resistant to change and unresponsive to the traditional methods of delivering such information. I often work with individuals I would not hesitate to describe as highly professional and skilled tradespeople, who also have severe learning, reading and writing issues. The only way to effectively educate these people is through peer-group learning on the tools.
