Having passed through the initial shock of the changes brought about by the Building Safety Act 2022 and the secondary legislation that followed, senior management within the social housing sector is settling down into a more rational period of consolidation in their approach to delivering safer housing. More sensible and significantly less expensive safety engineering solutions are now gaining wider acceptance as answers to what previously may have been considered intractable fire and structural issues in our older housing stock. To suggest that 'building safety management' is an entirely new construction discipline in its own right is perhaps going too far. Still, Grenfell has proven that silo-thinking concerning separate design, construction, and occupation phases does not deliver safe homes. It is an exciting and rewarding experience to be part of the exercise of joining the dots between the design drawing board and the last person to occupy the building in question.
