The busy few have to wear many hats to run a small Broker-Dealer.Managing the home office (and branch offices as we grew) gave me first hand experience building-out different systems. In most cases, I had to figure out (from scratch) how to best do something, then lay out a blueprint for others to follow.I'm proud to have to put together our first customer service matrix, transition procedures for business acquisitions, marketing plans, and our first written supervisory procedures. I had a personal hand in due diligence, FINRA & SEC examinations, talent acquisition, and the winding down of a fund. I orchestrated 34 direct mail campaigns, carefully targeting 250,960 households.I had an amazing time hosting 75 roadshow events, where our sales pitch was presented to 3,575 attendees. Each marketing campaign had better results than the one before, with progressive refinements to the message and mailing list. Over the span of five years, I had tripled our revenue without increasing our marketing budget.Best perk of the job? Being able to sit in the bullpen and listen to fantastic salespeople make outbound calls.

How cool is it that I got to help out?

I conducted client interviews and kept in touch with them throughout the process. I prepared documents in WealthDocs for attorney revue. Only after completing WealthDocs training did I better understand the legal and tax significance of different provisions. I prepared mock fiduciary tax returns for internal use, then supported the fiduciaries chosen preparer with the information they need.I learned estate settlement procedures, income taxes, debt collection, and estate tax planning, and blended family planning. I also learned how to diffuse conflicts among stakeholders and to steer difficult meetings towards actionable goals.

Meridian was early in pioneering the delivery of real-time remote sensing data to corporate customers over the Internet. We used on-premise equipment that were assembled-to-spec and installed on vessels by our team-members. Microcontrollers on these remote vessels feed sensor data to us using Inmarsat-C radios. That data is cleaned up and stored in a database, before being fed to our customers' internal applications.My job was to make sure everything *just worked* on my watch. There would be issues with the on-prem equipment, Inmarsat's store-and-forward network, SQL server components, and our customer facing API. I would discover new edge cases that broke our scripts and translation layers.If there was a problem, I'd fix it and carefully document it. If I couldn't fix it, I'd wake someone up who could, and I would learn from the experience.I'm thrilled to have worked with such accomplished open source developers, embedded device hackers, and underwater explorers.Best perk of the job? Unfettered access to shop tools and watertight fittings

I certainly wasn't the most qualified candidate, but I got the job anyway for being a huge fan of Deming's work.While I was hired to support with the staffs' calendars, events, and travel, I got to do a lot more. The staff graciously shared the details of their projects and their ongoing progress.I left with a strong understanding on how to track productivity and quality, and how to implement a process of continuous improvement.Best perk of the job? Watching an arbitrage trading algorithm be conceptualized, modeled, crafted, iteratively improved, then ultimately validated on real ($1B) money.
