Do you remember growing up wanting to make a difference to this world? Not like a Superhero. But like an everyday human.Since my childhood, I have had a profound interest in science and an insatiable desire to understand how the world works and the causal relationships between things that make them as they are.This led to a life-long love of problem-solving. Reflecting on my own experience of growing up in a large family in small-town India, it seemed there was no end to problems to solve.Therefore it seemed unavoidable, predetermined even, that I would make it my personal mission to try and solve the critical problem of bringing more equality to agricultural communities.Agriculture is a challenging industry; many pitfalls and nuances must be considered and overcome to succeed in this space.I started working with Olam in Tanzania, where there were no smartphones and internet penetration. All transactions were on a cash basis. I built and ran operations of sourcing agri commodities across thousands of buying points while ensuring high levels of control and efficiency. That foundational experience helped me build a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in solving issues confronting smallholder farmers.Subsequently, I built the packaged foods business from scratch in Olam. Building an FMCG business in an Agribusiness company was an incredible entrepreneurial experience. It gave me the opportunity to solve for creating a business from 'Zero to 1' and then scale it from 1 to 10, achieving leadership positions across categories and countries. It was valued at S$ 1B when a Japanese partner invested in the business.As a founder and CEO of Jiva, I am connecting the dots of my past experiences - building and running complex operations for smallholder farmers in Tanzania and creating and scaling businesses from scratch in Packaged foods.Jiva is a phygital business where both technology and operations come together to uplift smallholder farmers at scale.
