I love being a GP and it gives me a sort of inner satisfaction that I can't describe when I help patients to get back on the tracks of their lives. And of course, comforting and supporting them on a different course if that is not possible. But the other thing I am absolutely mad about is medical education. I want our future doctors to understand that medicine (especially General Practice) is both an ART and a SCIENCE. A science - because obviously, you need to know your clinical stuff and how things work. An ART - because having just a wealth of clinical knowledge does not make you a good doctor. You need all sorts of softer skills (like communication, empathy, compassion, and so on) to be able to bridge the gap between the doctor and the patient. These softer skills help apply what the doctor knows in their "doctor's world" to the level that is required in the "patient's world". A good doctor requires both. And I love teaching about both - the SCIENCE and the ART of medicine.I'm still an active GP and a GP trainer training other GPs in my practice (we usually have about 5-8 at any one time). I have taught extensively at the University level and in GP training schemes. I have also taught and clinically supervised newly qualified doctors (called Foundation Year [FY] trainees) and Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Associate Physicians (who are health care professionals like pharmacists and paramedics who want to take on a more hands-on clinical role).
