The role of court client representative required me to operate within various roles at the courthouse, including that of a registrar and administrative staff. In the administrative office, I became more familiar with documents that are filed and issued in family and civil matters. When I administratively assisted on family matters, I would vet uncontested divorce applications and note deficiencies for setting the matter down, and review divorce orders to issue divorce certificates. Whereas in civil matters, I entered and issued notices of discontinuance, signed draft orders, and dismissal orders addressed to the registrar.

I quickly learned how to operate in the different stages of a criminal, civil, and family matter proceeding in Superior Court. Some examples are pre-trials, trials, motions, sentencing, and criminal and civil jury selection. Furthermore, I was able to maintain excellent performance by having thorough notes on the different types of proceedings and the relevant documents that come into play. My excellent work proffered me the early opportunity to work on a 1st-degree murder trial. I was able to stay composed and prepared to perform under highly sensitive and stressful situations, such as taking complex verdicts without making an error that would warrant a mistrial.Within the Court Support Division, I have earned the respect and trust of my peers and superiors alike. It has given me the chance to lead seminars that provide recent hires with a knowledge base of the legal system, procedures, decorum, and essential documents that are used in civil, family, and criminal proceedings. The knowledge base was supplemented by providing one-on-one guidance whenever possible.

The Class Action Clinic provides a wide range of legal services to class members across Canada, and it is the first clinic of its kind in North America. At the clinic, I provided information to class members regarding the general Canadian class action framework and particular class actions. Additionally, I assisted class members with completing claims and gathering relevant documents for submission. When assisting class members, I implemented trauma-informed strategies in an effort to reduce re-traumatization and in recognition of the role that trauma plays in the lawyer-client relationship. I also extensively researched and wrote with the view of law and practice reform within the class action sphere.

At Community Legal Aid (CLA), in Windsor, I was involved in several complex files involving tenant rights, and some suits in Small Claims Court. As a caseworker, I had the opportunity to interview clients to gather facts while identifying possible legal issues and the resolution being sought by the client. Additionally, working at CLA expanded my experience in legal research and drafting legal documents, such as opening letters to clients and legal memoranda. As an intake support worker, I would schedule intake appointments after determining eligibility.

LS Travel Retail North America has convenience stores all over Canada. My store, Virgin Relay, had daily sales targets that ranged from $3000 to $8000 and would require a collaborative effort to achieve the target. Thus, we were constantly encouraged to cross-sell to our customers with products that they had not considered, such as a water bottle. In the past, I cross-sold a transaction to over $1000 within Virgin Relay's convenience store setting. Boosting average sales were achieved through the mixed application of my education in psychology, the interpersonal training from Freeman, and the suggestive training from Trindent Consulting. Additionally, customers would be served with the utmost respect and quality, which would often lead to customer rapport and loyalty. At LS Travel Retail, I would also reconcile cash from the float and safe, and ensure no money was missing. Another duty of mine was to assist the company in upholding marketing contracts through the arrangement of displays.

I gained insight into how the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) operated by working with Organization Health Inc. (OHI). As an intern, I attended various return-to-work meetings and a monitoring meeting, where the work transition specialist assessed the injured employee’s tasks and working conditions. I also visited worksites with case managers to inspect the working conditions and ascertain possible duties that the injured union member could perform. In client meetings, I sometimes acted as an interpreter between case managers and Spanish-speaking union members. After considering language barriers, I drafted letter templates in English and Spanish, which would describe to the union member the current stage and outlook of his case. Lastly, I would support the team by researching medical conditions, legislation, case law and WSIB policy.
