Research AssociateIris Educational Media Sep 2012 - Jun 2018Eugene, OregonAs a Research Associate for IRIS Educational Media, I was primarily in charge of developing strong and formal partnership agreements with individual leaders, schools, and community organizations that provided referrals in the state of Oregon. I also conducted one-on-one and group facilitation meetings with a wide range of students, parents, and school personnel in Oregon to develop two training curricula that are culturally adapted for Latino-Spanish speaking families. The first program, Padres Preparados: A Cultural Adaptation of an Evidence-Based Parenting Intervention (Prepared Parents) addresses the Latino achievement gap through a parent intervention designed to increase school readiness skills in preschool age children. The second project, Mis Hijos y Yo (My Children and Me), is a multi-media program that provides Latino parents with education materials to protect children from risks associated with divorce and familial separation. Both programs were awarded funding for a second phase of study by the National Institute of Health. -
Research AssistantUniversity Of Kansas Medical Center Jan 2012 - Jun 2012Kansas City, Missouri AreaAs a researcher for the Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center, I was able to collaborate with the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City, MO, in order to promote a health partnership between the Mexican Government and the University of Kansas Medical Center in a program titled Ventanilla de Salud Móvil. Thanks to this partnership, we were able to provide health and consulate services to over 2,000 Mexican nationals and other Latino families. I also collaborated in outreach activities for the annual Bike Safety Rodeo and Latino Health for All Coalition and provided support for the focus group research in Wyandotte County Health. Lastly, I provided grant writing support (American Heart Association and Office of Minority Health) and updated Latino demographic data in the state of Kansas. -
Research AssistantUniversity Of North Carolina At Charlotte Aug 2008 - Jul 2011Charlotte, North CarolinaAs a Research Assistant for the Social Determinants of Health Project, I was able to examine health disparities and the underlying social determinants that can negatively impact the health of underserved and disadvantaged community members – particularly the Hispanic immigrant population. The results of this study demonstrated the importance of several novel approaches to ameliorating health disparities including the use of community-based participatory research, the effectiveness of interventions that target social networks, the importance of primary care access in ameliorating health disparities, and the effectiveness of Geographic Information System software in order to map Latinos settlement patterns and healthcare services in Charlotte, NC.In addition, I compared the effectiveness of five different systems that provided primary health care to uninsured Hispanic population (Centro Medico Latino, Charlotte Community Health Clinic, Inc., CMC North Park Family Practice, Physicians Reach Out [Community Health Services], and CMC University Emergency Department). I also collected comprehensive data from local and census based sources to provide an updated overview of the Latino communities in Charlotte, NC. -
