CurrentHe was graduated in the Medical School of the University of Barcelona in 1975, obtaining his Doctorate degree in 1982. He became in 1983 a staff member of the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol. In 1994 he was appointed Head of the Liver Unit, and in 2008 he was appointed Head of the Gastroenterology Department of the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol (Badalona). In 1997 he became Associate Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Full Professor in 2010. He is member of the following Associations: AEEH, EASL, AASLD, and IC Portal Hypertension, International Ascites Club, and ILCA. President of the Societat Catalana de Digestologia since 2001 to 2003, Secretary of the AEEH since 2001 to 2005, Vice-President of the AEEH since 2005 to 2009, and member of the Advisory Board for the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis of the Health Ministery of Catalonia since 2000 to 2014.He has received 43 Research Grants from the Hospital Clínic i Provincial of Barcelona, INSALUD, CIRIT, CAICYT, FIS, and CIBERehd. He is working in several lines of investigation, the results of which have been published in the most prestigious international medical journals. Among these lines of research the most outstanding are: 1) ascites, 2) portal hypertension, 3) bacterial infections in cirrhosis, 4) chronic hepatitis, 5) hepatic encephalopathy, and 6) hepatocellular carcinoma. Over 700 papers were accepted for presentation in National and International Meetings and over 380 peer-reviewed papers and editorials have been published in many well known international journals including 26 in Hepatology, 23 in Journal of Hepatology, 21 in Gastroenterology, 12 in American Journal of Gastroenterology, 7 in Gut, 6 in New England Journal of Medicine and 2 in Lancet. The Impact Factor of these publications (SCI) is of 1,624.126, with a total of 13,141 citations and a Factor H of 58. He is author or co-author of 75 book chapters. He has delivered 622 lectures.
