Ramón graduated with a B.Sc. and a M.E.E. in Physics and Electrical Engineering, respectively, from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México. He then received the PhD in Physics from King’s College, University of London in 1997 for his work on nonlinear interactions in saturable-gain media. In addition, he has a strong postdoctoral experience in modelling and simulation of pulsed CO2, solid-state and dye lasers, partly acquired during his one-year stage at the Laser Physics Group of the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. His expertise in modelling and simulation of semiconductor optical amplifiers comes from his position as Research Assistant at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH, Zurich, where he conducted research in computational semiconductor optoelectronics and was involved in several Swiss and European projects. Research topics included all-optical logic gates, photonic signal processing employing semiconductors, optimization of active interferometric structures to perform all-optical wavelength conversion and time-division demultiplexing, etc. Moreover, the experience of Ramón is not limited to semiconductors, since as a result of his research work at Corning Inc. in the U.S.A., he has also investigated nonlinear interactions in single-mode fibres to be employed in dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) optical communication systems at 2.5 and 10 Gb/s. He is currently working as senior researcher at the National University of Mexico (UNAM). From september 2009 to september 2012 he was Secretary for Academic Affairs (deputy director) at the Institute of Engineering.Specialties: Modelling and Simulation, Optoelectronics
