Ecohus designs and builds sustainable, cost-competitive homes for the residential mass market, using readily available materials, standard construction methods, and proven technologies. We achieve this by integrating sustainability from the outset and through the economies of scale provided by large-scale developments. In addition, by our use of natural and low carbon materials, we address broader issues such as embodied carbon, the circular economy, and the natural and social values of the local community. The ecohus prototype demonstrates how we can deliver homes which are net-zero-plus .

Country Architecture was established by Ran Boydell to build on his 30+ years of experience in the UK and his native Australia. The practice has particular expertise in Country Houses, whether rural, coast or mountain, a weekend getaway or full working estate. We see architecture, interiors and gardens as an integral whole, especially for the Country House with its unique combination of romantic natural setting and pragmatic day-to-day demands. We work across a broad range of architectural sectors including commercial and community projects. For Town Houses, we take that same approach of integrating building and environment within the much tighter constraints of a dense urban setting. We are experienced with heritage conservation, including conversions and adaptive reuse, and are commited to integrating sustainable development in all pour projects.Well considered design is at the heart of how we practice architecture. The buildings we live and work in shape our lives, and architecture has enormous influence over a diverse range of issues, from the practical functioning of a space, to cultural and aesthetic styles, and our sense of community. We believe good architecture should seek to identify and resolve the often unspoken issues behind a brief, and to bring order and awareness to a setting which might have started with random and disparate elements.Our regional base in the UK is around Edinburgh, the Lothians, Borders, and Northumberland, and in Australia the Hunter Valley, New England and North Coast, but we often undertake projects elsewhere and are interested in enquiries from further afield. Studio based design is a key aspect of our approach, with digital technology and the internet enabling this remote working.

Heriot-Watt University is valued for its pioneering research informed by the global needs of business and industry, ranked in the top 10 universities in the UK and first in Scotland for research impact.Ran Boydell has been a visiting lecturer and tutor since 2017, mostly at the School of Textiles and Design but also at EGIS, the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. He has taught across a range of architecture, interior and engineering courses but always with a focus on integrtaing sustainable development into the student experience. He has also written various articles for The Conversation which rank amongst the top readership numbers for the university (see link below).

Boydell Architecture brought together the architectural expertise of Ran Boydell from his 20+ years of practice in the UK and his native Australia, with the established building surveying team that was originally part of John Sale & Partners, which had operated as rural agents in the England/Scotland border region since the 1920's. Their shared and rich heritage of rural life gave the business a unique role in country architecture.
