Ran Boydell Email and Phone Number
Ran Boydell has studied and practised architecture in the UK and his native Australia for over three decades. His work reflects his passion for sustainability, heritage, and rural architecture, and his career has encompassed roles as designer, developer, regulator and educator. With a collaborative, user-focussed approach, Ran’s extensive project experience encompasses all phases of the design and construction process, and ranges from single family houses to substantial commercial developments as well as master planning, policy guidelines, and technical reports. Clients include the public, private, and community sectors. This view from “all sides of the table” has given Ran a holistic perspective of the built environment and the building procurement process. At a time of major global challenges, Ran’s professional focus has turned to architecture that delivers on zero-carbon targets, to broader sustainability issues such as the Circular Economy and Natural or Social Capital, and which implements the UN Sustainable Development Goals “on the ground”. With this in mind, he works across disciplines to help drive a rapid transition to a sustainable construction sector. Ran teaches university courses on sustainable development, researches and writes about current sustainability issues, was a founder of the #ArchitectsDeclare initiative in Australia, and, through his ecohus brand, is a pioneer of sustainable homes for the residential mass market.

Director + FounderEcohus Aug 2014 - PresentUnited KingdomEcohus designs and builds sustainable, cost-competitive homes for the residential mass market, using readily available materials, standard construction methods, and proven technologies. We achieve this by integrating sustainability from the outset and through the economies of scale provided by large-scale developments. In addition, by our use of natural and low carbon materials, we address broader issues such as embodied carbon, the circular economy, and the natural and social values of the local community. The ecohus prototype demonstrates how we can deliver homes which are net-zero-plus . -
DirectorCountry Architecture Nov 2018 - PresentUk And AustraliaCountry Architecture was established by Ran Boydell to build on his 30+ years of experience in the UK and his native Australia. The practice has particular expertise in Country Houses, whether rural, coast or mountain, a weekend getaway or full working estate. We see architecture, interiors and gardens as an integral whole, especially for the Country House with its unique combination of romantic natural setting and pragmatic day-to-day demands. We work across a broad range of architectural sectors including commercial and community projects. For Town Houses, we take that same approach of integrating building and environment within the much tighter constraints of a dense urban setting. We are experienced with heritage conservation, including conversions and adaptive reuse, and are commited to integrating sustainable development in all pour projects.Well considered design is at the heart of how we practice architecture. The buildings we live and work in shape our lives, and architecture has enormous influence over a diverse range of issues, from the practical functioning of a space, to cultural and aesthetic styles, and our sense of community. We believe good architecture should seek to identify and resolve the often unspoken issues behind a brief, and to bring order and awareness to a setting which might have started with random and disparate elements. Our regional base in the UK is around Edinburgh, the Lothians, Borders, and Northumberland, and in Australia the Hunter Valley, New England and North Coast, but we often undertake projects elsewhere and are interested in enquiries from further afield. Studio based design is a key aspect of our approach, with digital technology and the internet enabling this remote working. -
