Ran liked the founders and the business model they had created so much that he immediately formed a relationship with the company. This ultimately led to a direct investment and the decision to bring the company to the U.S. market. In 2005, Ran established the company's U.S. office and personally led the dramatic expansion of Netbiscuits in the media and entertainment, publishing, ecommerce, travel and hospitality, retail and advertising sectors. Under his direction the company's U.S. revenue grew to represent over 50% of worldwide revenue with offices in New York, San Francisco and Reston. Netbiscuits provided a cloud-based mobile development and delivery platform that supported the mobile programs of leading companies such as eBay, Time Inc., MTV, CBS, Universal, Enterprise, Expedia and many more.
In 1996 Ran founded Ashburn International, originally as a technology investment and advisory firm. The company was distinguished as the first investment advisor on the sale of Internet Service Provider companies in Europe. Among the portfolio companies was Czech On Line, which later resulted in the establishment of Tiscali, one of Europe's largest ISPs. Ran then went on to found CommStar, a satellite data communications company which he sold to GE Spacenet in 1997. Following that, he established a payment transaction processing company in the Baltics under the name Ashburn International which became a leading provider of processing services for bank cards, retail loyalty card programs and prepaid mobile phone transactions. Ran built a state-of-the-art data center in Vilnius, Lithuania and grew the company to more than 50 employees serving all major banks and retailers. Ran sold the AI processing center to private investors in 2005.
