About Ran Peleg

Lecturer in Science Education within the Southampton Education School and member of the MSHE (Mathematics, Science and Health Education) research group. Work focuses on enhancing science learning by adopting and adapting genres such as escape rooms, theatre, drama and games.Before joining the Southampton Education School, I gained significant experience in educational project management and instructional design. Projects included:- Educational escape room project on chemistry, physics, natural history and financial education- EU funded TEMI project introducing storytelling to scientific enquiry- iSTEAM project merging innovation with and interdisciplinary STEAM approachI have a BA in Natural Sciences and an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge. My PhD in science education from the Technion focused on learning science in informal (free-choice) environments, specifically museum theatre. I was a Fellow of the Mandel Scholars in Education programme for distinguished Ph.D. students and also received a postdoctoral fellowship from the University of Haifa to research computerised instructional tools for blind students in the Division of Technologies in Education.(If you’ve made it this far … then) I’m looking for potential collaborators on R&D projects. I am also looking for promising prospective students with interests that align with the above.

    Work on the FP7 funded "TEMI" project involving 13 partners from 11 countries aimed at training teachers with innovative inquiry-based teaching methods. Responsibilities in the project include:• Organization of professional development workshops (~120 teachers).• Remote organization of a training symposium at Queen Mary, University of London, involving 20 representatives from the project partner-institutions. This included organizing the pedagogic programme, workshops, scientific demonstrations, and social events.• Regular communication with partners to monitor training progress in 9 countries.• On-going accountability to the project management and a yearly report to the EU.• Organization of bi-monthly video conferences for project partners.• Communication and publicity of the project including appearances in national and international academic conferences and an invited talk in a TEDx event.• Research and evaluation accompanying the teacher training in Israel.• Hosting of international partners to evaluate the project.

    Management of the Israeli branch of the S-TEAM (Science-Teacher Education Advanced Methods) project, an FP7 funded project consisting of 25 participating institutions from 15 countries. The project aimed at improving inquiry-based science teaching by training teachers across the Europe. Responsibilities included:• Management of the Technion group's budget (€89,000).• Administration of the project vis-à-vis the European commission, the project's senior management, the Technion's Research & Development Foundation (Liason's office), Human Resources office and the Department of Education in Science and Technology.• Representing the Technion group in international meetings and conferences.• Organisation of an international workshop with leading stakeholders from the ministry of education, deans, international researchers and leading teachers.• Collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) leading to a series of workshops for school children in Norway and several publications.• Developing and enacting workshops for teachers (~150 participants).• Presentation of the project in national teachers' conferences (reaching ~500 teachers), invited talks (in the UK, Norway and Israel) and several peer reviewed international research conferences.• Publication of the work done on the project in peer reviewed journals and professional teacher journals.
