When I was nine, I went on a class field trip to the YMCA. One of the activities we played involved gathering in a circle and trying to keep a balloon in the air without using our hands. I was the only one in the pit for a good three seconds before anyone jumped in with me. People often ask, are great leaders born or made? And just like the conclusion of most nature vs. nurture arguments, the answer is both.At the beginning of my career, I thought to be a good leader and a good manager was the same thing. They’re not. Being a manager is reactive to numbers, to KPIs, to objective goals. Being a leader puts you at the forefront of your team and allows you to focus on behaviors and intentions. People don’t leave their job; they leave their boss.For this reason, the mission statement that’s been the foundation of my career is: teamwork makes the dream work. I gain the loyalty of my team by developing them as people, not numbers. Throughout my career in finance management, I’ve managed a diverse group of employees. Through a servant leadership lens, I learned to manage time efficiently and manage people effectively. One cannot lead people efficiently because they’re not objective. The most significant realization I’ve had in my career is understanding that a great leader adapts to the learning styles of each person on the team and doesn’t expect the opposite.
