I am researching the effects of diluted bitumen on marine ecosystems by looking at seaweeds as a bioindicator for marine health. Specifically, I examine the effects of diluted bitumen on the early developmental stages of four culturally important and habitat-forming seaweed species in British Columbia. In addition, I am responsible for training and mentoring multiple research assistants in field and lab work. I have a deep understanding of experimental design, statistical analysis, spatial mapping, and the publication of my research in scientific journals. I intend to defend my thesis in August 2021.

I investigated the effects of diluted bitumen, a petroleum product, on the germination and growth rate of the macro-algal species, Fucus distichus. This research project has included fieldwork, determination of protocols, data entry, and statistical analysis and inference. I am preparing a manuscript for publication of the results in a scientific journal. I was the Ecological Restoration Coordinator for the Lower Mainland Green Team under the non-profit Green Teams Canada for a contractual period of 3 months. During this time I was responsible for coordinating logistics for community events such as assessing sites with municipal staff and securing refreshments and equipment.I also trained community members in invasive plant identification, removal and planting of native species, and tool safety and use. Further, I connected people, particularly youth, to nature and educated them about the importance of protecting biodiversity. As a media spokesperson, I was interviewed by media outlets and expanded Green Team's social media presence. Lastly, I initiated a new outreach method for a volunteer work party that increased the number of volunteers by 30 percent. Most of all, I enjoyed working outdoors and inspiring individuals to take actions in their communities by preserving biodiversity.I was invited to return to lead community events again in 2019.

North Vancouver

I designed education programming at the Ecology Center for youth of varied age groups. The educational program varied on topics from Insect Biology, Ecology, and Environmental Restoration Projects. I was independently responsible for groups as large as 20 individuals.I was also responsible for front desk staff duties including giving park information, answering questions about the local flora and fauna, and cashiering.

I collaboratively worked with other educators to develop develop naturalist and science focused curriculum for summer children’s programs. I also facilitated summer program curriculum to children in an engaging manner. Furthermore,I actively participated in the design, organization and activities of “Pollinator Day” which focused on engaging children aged 5-12 about the importance of pollinators in the environment. Lastly, I assisted the Education Director with administrative tasks such as invoicing, communications, and training volunteers.

I managed the head office of BC Nature while also assisting two other non-profits, NatureKids BC and Elder's Council of BC Parks. My daily tasks included providing administrative support for maintaining a reference database of all 5400 BC Nature members, organizing documents and project management. I also managed BC Nature's communications which included writing Press releases, online newsletters, emails ,updating various social media platforms and editing biannual magazine. I gained significant experience in bookkeeping through the program Quickbooks. I also completed expense reports for Directors and submitted them in a timely manner.I was delegated various projects which included preparing outreach material and presentations for various age groups and educational levels. These projects enabled me to utilize programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and WordPress in which I have substantial knowledge. Of the many projects I was delegated, I was able to lead a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a legal battle that BC Nature and several other non-profits ensued against the National Energy Board and Enbridge for the proposal of the Northern Gateway Pipeline.

Simon Fraser University

I was involved in research project that was investigating the ecological impact of Scotch Broom on the diversity of pollinators in an Oak-Savannah ecosystem. This required a rigorous amount of field work which included completing field surveys which allowed us to attain detailed data on plant communities. Field work was done independently and in teams in remote areas at times. This experience also further strengthened my entomological identification skills so that I was capable of identifying Bumblebee and Fly genera and species on the fly. Lastly, I led a co-op project which involved experimental design, field work, and data analyses. The results were finalized in a concisely written technical report on flowering phenology and the relationship with temperature in Oak-Savannah habitats in South Western British Columbia.

Through my experience at Grouse Mountain I gained strong listening and problem solving skills from interacting with people of various backgrounds. I became confident in giving presentations to large groups of people and I conducted surveys which involved approaching individuals and groups to rate quality of customer services and overall tourism experience. Ultimately, I gained substantial knowledge of Eco-tourism in British Columbia.

I was responsible for the management of Capilano University's Biology Department's Laboratories. I was also responsible for administrative tasks which included maintaining notebooks and preparing orders and invoices, as well as maintaining various types of equipment. I was also required to be trained in the University's lab safety policies. My overall responsibility was ensuring that lab operations would efficiently continue at the start of the Fall Semester.Furthermore, I was required to complete several tasks of animal and plant care within a short and intensive time frame. These tasks included maintaining fresh and marine water tanks, and insect (larval) colonies as well as providing care for various species of animals including amphibians, amphipods, echinoderms, and reptilians. I was also in charge of maintaining a greenhouse and ensuring that plant breeding and care were provided.
