During my last year of law school, I was lucky enough to work as a part-time law clerk for the legal counsel of the Texas Rangers. As an intern for the team's in-house legal counsel, I reviewed stadium lease agreements and vendor contracts, researched state tax issues concerning improvements to the Ballpark, reviewed the use of Rangers and Major League Baseball trademarks by local advertisers, researched state and federal employment law as they applied to employees of the team, and performed various other legal research and writing assignments.

After graduating from Baylor, I worked in the U.S. civil service for several years with three different federal agencies. I started out with the USDA Rural Development offices in Hillsboro and Cleburne, Texas, as an assistant in their mortgage loan program. Rural Development financing provides and guarantees mortgages to rural homeowners. In 2005, I moved to the Dallas regional office of the Department of Commerce as a data analyst and field representative. In that capacity, I primarily worked on monthly employment statistics and surveys throughout the state of Texas. After I started law school at SMU, in 2009, I transferred to the Dallas regional office of the Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration. At EBSA, I assisted with investigations of group health insurance plans and assured compliance with federal health care reform provisions concerning COBRA coverage and federal subsidies. In my first year with EBSA, I closed more cases than any other benefits advisor nationwide involving the COBRA continuation subsidy. I was later appointed as the regional coordinator of the Voluntary Fiduciary Compliance Program. The VFCP is available to small employers who have not complied with ERISA pension and health insurance regulations but wish to bring their plans up to date without a full Department of Labor investigation.
