"Teaching is the one profession that creates all other professions." — Author UnknownPlain and simple: Working with people and languages is an exciting career, and I have been involved in English language education since 1987. TEACHING AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENTI currently work at the English Language Institute at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Writing Skills Coordinator. I teach a variety of courses in this 8-level intensive English program. My areas of interest and specialty include Web-based materials development, language assessment, and teacher training. INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN AND MATERIALS DEVELOPMENTOutside of my university work, I manage an educational wrbsite business with two main goals: (1) provide free online language-learning content for English students and teachers around the world, and (2) offer professional development and teacher training opportunities to teachers around the world.One of the main projects is the development of Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening Lab (https://www.esl-lab.com), a popular and long-running online learning portal to help English learners improve their language skills. Other sites include DailyESL.com, Trainyouraccent.com, and EZslang.com. Another aspect of my work involves hosting and producing regular Facebook Live and YouTube broadcasts with teachers and students from around the world on topics related to language teaching and learning. TEACHER TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTIn addition to teaching and creating web-based content, I have given keynote addresses, workshops, and presentations at educational events in China, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, throughout the United States, and other diverse places. Such experiences have included invitations from the Regional English Language Office of the US Embassy in different countries to support local and regional public diplomacy efforts through cultural exchange and teacher training at conferences. I also participated as an English Language Specialist with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia on teacher training in the area of language assessment and technology. Many of my presentations have focused on language instruction, professional and human development, and educational technology. Connecting with other teachers in such situations has broadened my understanding of others who are striving to excel often in challenging educational settings. In my "free" time, I enjoy gardening, running ultramarathons, hiking, and doing anything with family.
