First year composition. Required. Rigorous. And generally Reviled. That's because so few students have a robust "writing process" that can help them write persuasively in every class and career. Or, if they do, it's "Let me ask ChatGPT." I love teaching college composition -- partly because I was a professional writer out there in the real world for many years (video scripts, brochures, web sites, speeches, books, and many more). Also, I love watching first year college students discover their own voice and express themselves in a compelling way. I help them develop a process that will work anywhere, with any type of communication.While many educators are resisting AI, I actually base my entire 1102 class around experimenting with generative AI as a collaborator, while at the same time helping students trust their unique voice. AI is not going away, so educators need to embrace the positive aspects of it as a tool -- a subject I have been asked to speak on at several conferences for educators. Learning to write confidently. Learning to use artificial intelligence to develop your own voice. Besides my love of professional communication (which I still do on the side), these are my passions!
