Treece was involved in using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) as a synthesis tool to grow new and meta-stable superconductors and super-hard thin films.Dr. Treece:• Established collaborations with multiple university groups that resulted in 18 publications and 23 presentations• Synthesized and fully characterized a new phase of metastable, superconducting NbN with the highest known transition temperature (Tc) for NbN• Proved that the higher transition temperature (Tc) metastable film had a previously-unknown structure for NbN• Synthesized and characterized metastable CNx films• Published 18 papers, authored 4 invited and 19 contributed presentationsThe nitride films were grown by ablating graphite or metal targets in high background pressures of nitrogen gas. The tribological properties of the CNx films were being determined by Knoop hardness measurements and friction testing as a function of nitrogen content, found by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), and C N covalency, determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. A new phase of single crystal NbN with Tc (R=0) > 16.4 K has been grown on heated MgO (100) substrates.
