Profile bio

About Randi Bates

As a clinician and scientist, I strive to improve family wellbeing, especially for those in low-resource settings. As a nurse practitioner, I've been able to work with patients to understand the long course and complexities of their chronic illnesses. As chronic illnesses usually have taken a long time to manifest and develop, I spend time to educate and provide health coaching for my patients so that together, we can make shared decisions to optimize their health. As a scientist, I investigate why chronic illnesses develop. A major focus of chronic illness development has been that of early life experiences. Managing stress and adversity early in life can have major consequences for health. That's why I investigate how to best characterize stress and adversity early in life and what we can do about it. I partner with developmental psychologists, health care clinicians, biologists, and classroom experts to understand how, when, where, why, and for whom early stress manifests.I began my career as a nurse in public health and later in a large academic medical center in areas such as med/surg, critical care, transplant, and endoscopy. As a public health nurse, I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic to research and develop culturally-sensitive programming to improve community health. I also served in numerous medical missions and as a first responder RN immediately after the devastating Haitian earthquake of January 2010. As a Registered Nurse, I was drawn to the blend of roles of clinical care, research, and programming to advance wellbeing for families of diverse backgrounds. Now, as a clinician and scientist, I can advance all three areas on a broader scale. In my spare time, I enjoy catching up on my long list of books I want to read, jogging around my neighborhood, and spending time with my family in Ohio, NYC, and Peru.

Listed skills include Presentation Skills, R, Immunoassays, Public Speaking, and 46 others.
