I am an impact-driven researcher and an entrepreneur in the tech field.== Experience ==Throughout my Ph.D I worked with Dr. Cynthia Breazeal at MIT on how young children understand and interact with Artificial Intelligence. In addition to studying children and answering ethical questions, I developed a series of tools and curricula for children at these young ages to learn how to build their own AI-enabled projects. This area of research is timely and significant today AI technologies become increasingly prevalent in society.I am passionate about learning, helping others learn, and exploring other cultures and the experiences that shape people into who they presently are. I have a strong passion for technology and encouraging others to use technology to empower themselves. In addition to research, I do many outreach events to underrepresented minorities in computing fields. During college, I completed internships at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, MIT's Media Lab, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, and Jawbone. At MIT Lincoln Laboratory I worked in the Decision Support and Informatics Group doing video analytics through machine learning. At MIT's Media Lab I worked for the Fluid Interfaces group and developed web and mobile applications to help busy individuals automatically track key aspects of their day such as sleep, commute, movement, and location. I conducted research in the robotics department of NASA JPL as a Caltech Southern California Edison Company MURF Fellow. I worked at Jawbone as a CODE2040 Fellow in the Tools Team (web development).At UMBC I was a part of UMBC's ECLIPSE research cluster under the mentorship of Dr. Nilanjan Banerjee. I also founded and led hackUMBC, an organization that brought hackathons to UMBC's campus (www.hackumbc.org).

Graduate Research InternMit Lincoln Laboratory Jun 2016 - Aug 2016Lexington, Ma, UsWork in the MIT Lincoln Laboratory is protected. However, my general goal was to benchmark a computer vision algorithm to support human decision makers. This included adding new modules and optimizing an existing code base so that it was more user-friendly and required fewer computer resources. At the end of the summer, I presented my research to the team that would continue to use my work after I left. The visualizations that I created for benchmarking the software helped the team understand what system improvements needed their attention first.During the summer, I also participated in an entrepreneurship competition. I presented work in two teams: one for a computer vision algorithm to understand American Sign Language and another that used computer vision to identify parking spaces, integrating with navigation apps such as Google Maps. In both of these projects, I played a role in designing the algorithms, interfaces, and visualizations for presenting the work to the Lincoln Lab community. The second project was selected as a semifinalist in the competition. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Maryland Baltimore County Aug 2014 - May 2016Baltimore, Md, UsUnder Dr. Nilanjan Banerjee, I worked in the Mobile, Pervasive, and Sensor Systems Laboratory on the Inviz project and Flex Gloves projects.The Inviz project is a long-running project that uses textile capacitive sensors to make a flexible, and comfortable interface for paralysis patients to interact with their home environments. In addition to doing data analysis for this project, I also developed a shape sensing layer that uses bend resistors to estimate the shape of the conductive array. This allows for better gesture recognition by accounting for the distortion of the array in te capacitive measurements.The RLS Band helps doctors diagnose patients with Restless Leg Syndrome by collecting data from a low-power, textile band that captures leg movements while the patient is asleep. This work is done in conjunction with a clinical lab at Johns Hopkins University.FlexGloves is a project to help disabled individuals with spinal cord injuries complete physical therapy by visualizing their movements and receiving live feedback. I built two FlexGloves and designed a custom PCB board to interface with the gloves and wirelessly transmit data to a visualization system. -
Summer Research InternMit Media Lab Jun 2015 - Aug 2015Cambridge, Massachusetts, UsDuring the Summer of 2015 I worked under Dr. Pattie Maes and Dr. Niaja Farve from the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media Lab. I developed two projects: W.A.T.C.H. and BusyBee. These are time-tracking applications that use a novel interface to communicate a lot of information about how a user is spending their time in a very simple manner. During the summer, I developed a mobile application, a web application, and an original time-tracking interface in a fully functional prototype. I also conducted user interviews to understand the needs of the target population (adults 18+ who regularly use online or mobile time trackers) and to evaluate the extent to which these devices met the needs of this population. -
