Optical Designer

Oct 2021 - Nov 2023

Postdoctoral Researcher

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I led the development of metal halide perovskites for efficient on-chip electro-optic (EO) modulation, in collaboration with a major Chinese telecommunications company. I designed the optical characterization setups for testing the EO effect, as well as second harmonic generation. I fabricated EO devices and optimized the process flow for material poling in a DC electric field.I also leveraged my previous experience to help advise on the Light Emission projects within the group. I assisted in the characterization and analysis of materials and devices.I investigated new directions for sponsored research within the group, conducting market research and developing pitch decks for prospective industrial collaborators.

Aug 2020 - Oct 2021

Postdoctoral Researcher In Semiconductor Devices

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

As lead on the polariton lasing project, I fabricated VCSEL and DFB laser cavities and demonstrated polariton lasing in organic chromophores. I also assisted in defining the project goals and milestones for the Light Emission research program, which contained both laser and LED thrusts.I made first contact and negotiated the industry contract with a NSW-based optoelectronics company. I supervised the project, which improved the optical gain in III-V semiconductor lasers by modelling and characterizing devices.I also demonstrated the first solution-processed Faraday rotator based on metal halide perovskites, achieving Faraday rotation on par with the current industry standard.

Oct 2017 - Aug 2020

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

As the leader of the lasing efforts in the group, I led the design, fabrication, and characterization of photonic crystal cavities. With these, I was able to demonstrate the first example of continuous-wave lasing in colloidal quantum dots, enabling a next generation of lightweight, flexible optoelectronic devices. This work was published in Nature (co-first author).I contributed to a product development team for a high power phosphor, in collaboration with a major Ontario AV company. We developed a high-power light-emitting phosphor that was 30% more efficient than the industry standard.I was also the scientific and business lead of an industry collaboration with a Detroit-based automobile manufacturer on transparent perovskite LEDs. I was first point-of-contact for our industry sponsor and the project manager of the UofT team. To increase our budget, I authored a funded Canadian Research and Development (CRD) grant to match industry contributions.

May 2015 - Sep 2017

Research Assistant

Rochester, New York Area

I led a joint project between an inorganic catalysis lab and an ultrafast spectroscopy lab, where we developed systems for the photochemical production of hydrogen from water. This involved the synthesis of organic chromophores, steady-state and ultrafast spectroscopic analysis, and testing for hydrogen production from chromophore-catalyst systems. My research was partly funded by a National Science Foundation Research Fellowship (NSF) and a Sherman-Clarke Fellowship (UofR). It resulted in 8 publications.
