Conservation Capital is a Eugene-based land use and conservation consulting company. We specialized in ecosystem service payments and green infrastructure projects from public/private ventures that benefit the environment. My role was to design projects using my knowledge of working lands and conservation finance. As a project developer, I explored the role of green infrastructure and catastrophe bonds in mitigating the impacts of the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, submitted a plan to capture the ecosystem services of the Elliot State Forest, and designed a proposal to implement a "Conservation District" concept for rangeland restoration on juniper impacted working lands.

Bend, Oregon Area

I produced grass-fed beef, lamb, and poultry in Central Oregon, using rotational grazing and restorative agriculture techniques. My business plan was to lease fallow pastures and restore the land with natural fertilizer, irrigation, and animal management. Central Oregon is the ideal location to explore the relationship between a dense urban core surrounded by working lands that create secure food and fiber systems.

The Morsberger Group, LLC was a real estate development company that specialized in mixed use redevelopment and urban infill projects. Our goal was to restore urban centers that had become casualties of suburban sprawl. At this position, I had a wide variety of responsibilities. I had muddy boots and a hardhat as well as a suit and tie in my trunk; so as to be ready for anything. My favorite assignment was to manage a 120,000 cubic yard infill project where I negotiated the acquisition of over 10,000 dump trucks of aggregate material. After much research and some creativity, I began to produce recycled concrete aggregate onsite which turned our largest expense into a revenue stream and prevented thousands of tons of material from entering the landfill. This discovery taught me that pro-environmental ventures can be profitable and has shaped my thinking ever since.
