Jordan And Jefferson High Schools

Over the past 33 years I have mostly taught Biology. In addition of my Biology Courses, I have also taught Marine Biology, ICS (Integrated Coordinated Science), Advanced Physical Science and Chemistry. I served as Department Chair of the Science Department until the school moved over to Small Learning Communities and Academic Departments were abolished.While working at Jordan High School I was an Assistant Football Coach for six years and a Track and field Coach for the whole 16 years I worked at Jordan. During my stay at Jordan I documented performances in both Football and Track and Field using 35 mm Black/White technology. Students would work with me in my home using my dark room where they learned how to develop film (negatives) as well as print the photographs.During the 17 years I worked at Jefferson High School I was also involved with the Track and Field program as well as documenting performances during Football games using videocam technology.

Marshall High School, Chicago Illinois

I taught Biology and Physics at Marshall High School while in Chicago. I also coached Track and Field for the six years I was at Marshall.It was in Chicago that I began my work with photography and documenting the growth and development of students using 35 mm Black and White technology. I had a dark room in my apartment where students would come and work with me in projects that related to both the science I was teaching and the athletics I was associated with at Marshall.

While in the Peace Corps I taught a host of science classes to high school students. During those two years (1963 to 1965) the high school curriculum was dramatically changed to reflect how society there was evolving. I worked with youth in the "Morning School" (grades 7-12) for the whole 2 years, and with adults in the "Night School" (adult education, mostly for Liberian teachers and Liberians working at our local hospital) also for the whole 2 years I was in Liberia. For several months I also worked in the "Afternoon School" (grades 1-6), but had to stop when I became ill from exhaustion. Among other projects, my high school students and I worked with an agricultural expert from China where we constructed a demonstration rice paddy (located next to the main road) where the rice was irrigated. Using this technology we were able to harvest 3 rice crops a year, rather than the 1 rice crop from the "slash and burn" fields in the forest. We also worked closely with Care Inc, in enlarging the school facilities, putting in a generator for lighting the Night School (replacing gas lamps), and developing a feeding program for the Morning and Afternoon students.Pleebo is a community located about 20 miles from the coastal town of Harper in Maryland County. It was a very interesting community in that it was midway between the "Americo-Liberian" coastal towns and the very tribal interior. Freed slaves from America began populating 5 coastal communities in Liberia between 1823 and 1847 when Liberia declared it's independence. The culture of the American South was brought to these coastal settlements. Pleebo's location midway between coastal development and tribal interior made for some very interesting interactions on my part, for example all my students were from the tropical rain forest and tribal communities of the interior.
