I relocated from Ottawa to Nortel Networks’ Research Triangle Park location, where I served as the team lead for UNIX system administration. My responsibilities included managing 800 Solaris and HP-UX systems (300 servers and 500 desktops). Over a six-month period from June to November, I significantly improved the success rate of our monthly UNIX patching process, increasing it from approximately 20% to 80%. Additionally, I ensured all systems met Y2K OS level requirements and streamlined the desktop lease refresh process to avoid late return penalties and reduce order-to-fulfillment times. Later, I was promoted to the first-level manager role, overseeing the Nortel Network Management Center (NMC) at the RTEC facility. This challenging environment which provided credit-card fraud protection demanded high availability, involved various server types, and lacked established ITIL operational processes prior to my tenure.

As a manager, I oversaw Informix DBAs and HP-UX system administrators responsible for Nortel Networks’ mission-critical Global Supply Management web-based purchasing system. This system processed $3.8 billion in transactions in 1998. I improved system performance, disaster recovery readiness, and availability through various initiatives. Additionally, I developed a source management process and implemented version control tools for suMitt and Purchasing On Line (POL) application upgrades. I enhanced the database and application backup environment, implemented web server load balancing to handle explosive POL transaction growth, and evaluated third-party database reporting and OLAP tools. I also assisted developers in optimizing SQL code and created custom code for data import from legacy purchasing systems. Furthermore, I managed the Fitzgerald datacenter UNIX infrastructure, overseeing backup, administration, and reliable operation of 110+ HP-UX and Solaris servers, along with 50+ desktop UNIX devices.

As an IS Advisor reporting to the Senior Manager, Central Operations, I developed a mainframe consolidation strategy at Nortel. This initiative, which began in 1997, reduced the total cost of ownership by streamlining from three mainframe data centers to one. Additionally, we consolidated seven small VM systems into a single large mainframe by 2000.As a staff systems programmer, I created and implemented a corporate-wide WWW identity management database and password distribution mechanism. This supported the global rollout of web-based applications. I also initiated an RFP, selected the technology, and led the initial implementation of 1.3 TB of high-availability DASD (disk) in Ottawa and RTP, resulting in immediate hard savings of $120,000 per year.

As a team lead, led a 4-person development team that re-architected the mainframe based SQL resource tracking database that managed all IS managed resources associated with an employee (telephone numbers, email accounts, userids etc.) and implemented it as a distributed three tier client/server architecture under UNIX. Designed the mechanism that propagated userid creation and modification requests to downstream systems, resulting in automatic userid creation or deletion within 60 minutes. Designed and implemented interfaces to various directory services including NIS and the corporate email address book. As a programmer/analyst, implemented a proprietary high-speed, fault-tolerant cross-platform RPC-Based client/server directory lookup facility embedded in proprietary email clients installed on 20,000+ desktops company-wide. This development involved a code "port" from IBM mainframe assembler to C code on SunOS. This code performed name matching against the corporate email address book. The back-end infrastructure handled and average of 220,000 lookup requests per day with sub-second response times. Re-architected a 4,000-node NIS (YP) domain to reduce support costs by $90,000 annually and quadruple the speed with which updates were propagated.

As a system programmer, I developed unique enhancements to the RSCS mainframe communication program in IBM 370 assembler. These enhancements allowed BNR to route mainframe communication traffic over its shared TCP/IP network, eliminating the need for dedicated ‘mainframe only’ VTAM and bisynch communication circuits. Additionally, I installed and supported mainframe communication program products under z/VM (formerly known as VM/HPO and VM/XA). I also maintained and improved UNIX/Mainframe integration utilities in both System 370 assembler and ‘C’.
