I am originally from the Philippines.My mother introduced me to the delightful world of music when I was just six years old. It all started with the Ukulele, and although my fingers struggled to produce any sound initially, I quickly developed my skills and began playing. We would often sing folk songs together, creating beautiful melodies and harmonies.As I grew older, American missionaries taught me how to play the guitar in the early 70s. It was an exciting new instrument for me to explore. Coincidentally, our local branch in Pagadian City lacked an organist, which led me to dabble in basic hymn accompaniments. I found joy in experimenting with basic chord progressions and adding my personal touch to these cherished hymns.When I went to attend college in Cebu City, a burning desire to play the piano took hold of me. With determination and sheer observation, I taught myself how to play by closely watching a skilled pianist. It wasn't an easy journey, but I dedicated countless hours to practice at the Lahug chapel, with no formal teacher to guide me. So, I learned to play the piano without owning a piano and without a single formal lesson. Then I left to serve in the Phils. Cebu Mission from 1979 to 1981.Many years later on a quiet night in October 2004, as I sat at the piano, I humbly approached the Lord, asking for the gift of creating personal musical arrangements of hymns. It was a heartfelt plea for a talent that would allow me to express my love for the hymns. And now, through the Spirit, I have been blessed this gift, and I am grateful beyond words.Currently, I have crafted almost a hundred new arrangements of traditional hymns without being able to read or write music, showcasing my skills on the ukulele, guitar, and piano. Each arrangement is a labor of love, and hopefully I can transcribe them with a notation software soon. It brings me immense joy to share these arrangements in Sacrament meetings and musical firesides, allowing others to experience the beauty and power of old hymns in a new and meaningful way.________________________________________________________________________________________________________This page is for my network of LDS professionals.
