I conduct empirical research in the area of private equity, corporate finance, financial market infrastructures, and financial benchmarks.I taught the advanced corporate finance course entitled 'capital investment policy'. Amongst others, I taught net present value (NPV) analysis to assess investment projects and explain in detail the estimation of free cash flows (FCFs) and the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). In doing so, I explain the capital assets pricing model (CAPM) and equivalent models, such as the arbitrage pricing model and the Fama and French three-factor model to arrive at the cost of equity. Related to these models, I taught students modern portfolio theories and asset allocation models. Also the term structure of interest rates and the valuation of fixed income securities, together with financial benchmark analysis, to estimate the cost of debt or to proxy for the market portfolio is taught. Alternative investment valuation approaches such as the internal rate of return (IRR) and the discounted payback period approach are explained as well as the economic value added (EVA) and market value added (MVA) approach. In addition to investment analyses, students are taught how to value companies thereby using the discounted cash flow (DCF) model, the dividend discount model (DDM) or the comparable companies approach. In doing so, students are also explained how to select an optimal capital structure. Finally, students were thought how to value financial options thereby using the Black & Scholes valuation model as well as binomial real options models, like the method of the replicating portfolio and the usage of risk-neutral probabilities. In addition to teaching the course, I assisted master students with their master theses in the area of corporate finance and asset management.
