Principal Software Engineer

San Francisco Bay Area

I've played many roles during my time at Fitbit. I joined as an individual contributor but that quickly turned into a technical lead role. In fact, I am currently managing two teams, providing technical leadership across software engineering and still making the occasional individual contributions.- Designed and implemented the Fitbit Microservice framework on top of Finagle. This is the basis for splitting out services from the monolith or for creating new services- Manage and helped build up the App Platform team responsible for core components like the Microservice framework, Kafka, Elasticsearch, User service and Cohort service.- Established and manage a Data Platform team responsible for extracting data from production sources and making it available for processing using tools like Spark and Hive.- Helped build and lead an Architecture Review Group responsible for aiding teams in designs of new features and components.- Scaling and Resilience Group technical advisor responsible for analyzing the overall system to ensure it is resilient to failures and will scale to meet our needs. This group is especially instrumental leading up to the holidays to ensure we are ready for large usage increases.- General technical and people lead working with engineers, product and leadership across the company. This includes contributions from advising engineers on technical and career development matters to company-wide roadmap planning.

Co-Founder And Vp Of Technology

Score Out

Score Out is a company my friend and I started that I work on in my spare time. The original idea was to provide a real-time golf yardage guide for your cell phone using GPS called the Score Out Caddie. The initial application was written in J2ME and required the user to use a bluetooth GPS device that the Caddie could poll for location data. This all predated smartphones with GPS and "app stores" so we were never really able to gain much traction. However, once GPS and mobile applications became common place we decided to port the Caddie to the Android platform. We are currently working on an iPhone version. In addition, we released our open source library (http://www.j4me.org/). There is a lot more I would love to do with this project if I could find the time.Technologies include Java (J2EE and J2ME), Spring, MySQL, Hibernate, Objective C, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, PHP, Joomla.
