It’s not surprising that many successful individuals come from a diverse background of experiences. In my case it was a family run company that gave me my first business knowledge. What I remember the most are dealing with the customers, those folks who helped put food on our tables. Those times cemented the belief that businesses are driven by positive customer experiences.My first career out of college was in teaching, high school business/computer courses at an intercity high school – challenging to say the least. We wrote a computer curriculum from scratch (nobody was doing this at the time) as well as built a first class computer lab with a IBM System 36 main frame donated to the program – I learned how to read a manual during this process! In the end, our students were getting jobs in local firms as computer operators, a great accomplishment for this school and the area and something I am proud of to this day.But teaching couldn’t pay the bills, an unfortunate reality in the profession, and I took my first IT job in a local insurance firm. This led to bigger and better opportunities on the West Coast and eventually ended with my executive leadership position at Preferred Employers, a workers’ compensation carrier.My path taught me many things, the importance of the customer, leadership and mentoring skills that led to many long and successful careers for my team members and business strategy and the impact smart technology decisions can have on a company and its employees.Experienced in business technology for Fortune 500, regional, turnaround and startup companies, I am well versed in visualizing solutions, defining roadmaps, project planning, implementing, and managing complex and innovative business and insurance technology solutions.
