In 2005, an incident with a 7-year-old rag picker named Rohan shook Rani’s conscience and she founded Aarohan – a not-for-profit to address the educational needs of underprivileged slum children from childhood to livelihood. Aarohan also teaches life skills and extra-curricular skills to enable the children to integrate with society and take control of their lives. Her strong belief is that investment in early childhood is the building block for a healthy nation.Rani was clear that the health of a community is a critical factor in the healthy development of children. She extended her vision to skilling women – many of them mothers/siblings of Aarohan children to make them financially independent. Aarohan actively participated in drafting Delhi Transgender bill. Aarohan’s targeted intervention for HIV AIDS, in association with the Government of India is located at a Centre in West Delhi and carries out awareness creation, counselling, health check-ups as well as literacy drive and vocational training for the transgender community. Aarohan works with the tribal communities in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh through educating children and facilitating revenue streams for tribal handicrafts.Aarohan was registered (2005) as non-governmental organization (NGO) under the Society Registration Act, 1860 of India with its Head Office located in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, India - which serves as epicenter of its programs and activities.The philosophy: “If a child cannot reach to the school, the school must reach the child!” The vision “Empowered children through exercise of Rights- education, health and dignified livelihood”The organization’s approach is different in the sense that it takes upon it the parental responsibilities. It strives to provide holistic support till children become self reliant. Mothers’ literacy and empowerment (social, economic and financial) is critical to educating a child- in organization’s initiatives.
