This affected daily productivity of both internal developers and customers who implement insurance using the Guidewire SDK.The goal was to significantly reduce the build and test times and consequently the CI/CD cost.Performance improvements were done at several levels:1. Introducing concurrency within individual tasks.2. Making the individual tasks incremental using Gradle.3. Parallelizing build tasks using the gradle worker API.4. 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙧𝙚-𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜Guidewire applications are huge, complex, monlithic, and used a custom built, scriptable build system. The previous build system was based off of Ant and Maven and had become a maintenance overhead.Gradle was chosen as the new build tool, keeping in mind the capabilities of the old build system and the scripting requirements of the build.The migration effort involved a lot of test driven development and re-design, understanding existing functionality, collaboration with various teams and working closely with PM and PgM.This project helped modernize our tech stack and got rid of the tech debt and maintenance overhead. It also resulted in performance improvements to the build system and laid a foundation and path for future improvements.𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙆𝙋𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜Guidewire's applications communicate with each other but there was no way to co-relate a business transaction across the entire suite of applications. Moreover, the logging lacked some capabilities to capture key performance indicators (KPI).The platform underlying the applications was an ideal place to introduce these capabilities as all applications would automatically benefit from it.After introducing these features, also experimented with visualization tools like Splunk and Kibana to demonstrate cross application tracing.𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩Guidewire products had a very long release cycle with each major version taking around 18 months. There was a need to release at a faster cadence to get features and improvements to customers sooner in smaller increments.A major blocker to accomplish faster releases was lack of automation in infrastructure provisioning and testing.Added capabilities to existing CI/CD system to allow provisioning of testing infrastructure.This resulted in the platform release cadence gradually come down from 3 months to 2 weeks.
