About Raphael Da Silva Pereira

Master of Science (Microbiology) from the renowned PPG-MICRO at the Paulo de Góes Institute of Microbiology (IMPG-UFRJ), and Bachelor of Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Throughout my academic journey, I excelled as a scientific initiation scholarship holder at the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Microbial Ecology (LABEM-UFRJ). With extensive experience in General and Molecular Biology, I specialize in General and Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Genetics, Microbial Ecology Studies, along with proficiency in Molecular Biology Techniques and Biotechnology. I have been involved in diverse research projects, ranging from studying soil bacteria capable of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons to evaluating the role of soil microbial communities in plant development in extreme areas such as coastal sand dunes. I highlight my involvement in significant projects, such as researching microbial biofilms as a strategy for metal retention in the Rio Doce Basin, as well as my contribution to extension projects, such as using the Rio de Janeiro Marine Aquarium for Environmental Education at UFRJ. In addition to research, I have dedicated myself to teaching and inclusive education, serving as a volunteer monitor in disciplines like Botany II and Molecular Biology of Prokaryotes. My mandatory teaching internship at the College of Application (CAp UFRJ) allowed me to teach and participate in curriculum planning for elementary and high school classes. Recently, I served as Pedagogical Coordinator at the Rio de Janeiro unit of BeGreen, the largest network of urban farms in Latin America. In this role, I supervised the educational aspect of pedagogical visits to the farm. I am committed to contributing to innovative solutions in microbiology and education, seeking opportunities to apply my expertise and passion for these fields. For collaboration opportunities or further information, feel free to contact me via email: pereira.rphs@gmail.com.

  • Federal University Of Rio De Janeiro
    Graduate Research Fellow
Federal University Of Rio De Janeiro Mar 2020 - Oct 2023
Rio De Janeiro, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
Master's candidate in the Graduate Program in Sciences (Microbiology) at the Paulo de Góes Institute of Microbiology (IMPG-UFRJ). Under the guidance of Professor Diogo Jurelevicius at the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Microbial Ecology (LABEM - UFRJ), I investigated the role of microbial communities in sandbank soils for the development and maintenance of characteristic vegetation in this coastal ecosystem. By analyzing microbial communities in intra and inter-thicket soils, I sought to understand their influence on plant growth, adaptation to adverse conditions, and formation of characteristic vegetation thickets. The findings contribute to understanding the soil/plant relationship in sandbanks, conserving their biodiversity, and potentially developing biotechnological tools for soil restructuring and enrichment in degraded areas. Additionally, I mentored three undergraduate students in biology, biotechnology, and microbiology for their thesis and monographs. Skills include Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Genetics and Ecology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics. Experienced in handling biological materials, bacterial screening and manipulation, preparation of various types of culture media, cloning, isolation, extraction and quantification of genetic material, and PCR/ RT-PCR. Proficient in bioinformatics tools for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis, including Megan, BioNumerics, PAST, QIIME, and Mothur software. Experienced in phenotypic tests of plant growth-promoting bacteria, such as exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, indole acetic acid (IAA) production, phosphate solubilization and mineralization, nitrogen fixation, and siderophore production.
