About Raphaël Deberdt

Raphael Deberdt recently completed his PhD at the Department of Anthropology of the University of British Columbia and is now a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Colorado School of Mines. His expertise is centered on extractivism, resource frontiers, political ecology, inequalities, and environmental and social justice. He specializes in critical minerals extraction, production and trade, and his interest in Central Africa motivated his research on the artisanal cobalt sector. He has conducted fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United States, Sweden, and the European Union and has over 8 years of consulting expertise in the responsible minerals field. His research has been published in Antipode, The Extractive Industries and Society, Resources Policy, The Annals of the American Association of Geographers, Law and Social Inquiry, Society and Natural Resources, as well as in book chapters and professional reports.     Leading RSN's research on responsible minerals supply chains, I increased the scope of our work to cobalt and lithium. Lead author and researcher of the 2019 edition of Mining the Disclosures, analyzing disclosures under Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act, focused on 3TG uses. This edition also analyzes corporate public information on cobalt due diligence though 24 brand companies in the ICT, jet engines and automotive sectors. Represent RSN at the PPA, including the reviewing of project proposals, and the EPRM in which I joined the cobalt strategic team.
