Ziel der DAFRIG ist es, freundschaftlicher Beziehungen zu afrikanischen Ländern herzustellen und zu vertiefen und damit einen Beitrag zur Völkerverständigung zu leisten.Erste Aktivitäten Ende 1989/Anfang 1990 führten im April zur Gründung einer DAFRIG-Gruppe in Leipzig. Am 19. Mai 1990 erfolgte in Berlin die offizielle Gründung der Deutsch-Afrikanischen Gesellschaft e.V. – DAFRIG. Über viele Jahre bestanden zwei eng kooperierende, jedoch rechtlich selbständige Vereine nebeneinander. Ende 2015 fusionierten diese zu einer gemeinsamen Deutsch-Afrikanischen Gesellschaft.
