The First Year Innovation and Research Experience Program (FIRE) is a program for pre-medical students at UMD to gain first hand and hands on experience working in a laboratory collaborating with their peers. During this 3 semester program, I had the opportunity to learn a great deal about gene creation, manipulating, and addition. My final semester in the program my team and I created a new gene to be inserted into a C. Elegans organism, which we completed successfully by coding a new gene.

I worked as a research assistant (internship) under Kellie Tamashiro in the behavioral psychology lab at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. I performed many of the same duties that a research assistant would perform as well as being exposed to being a scientist and conducting experiments alongside the other researchers.
