About Raphaël Scherrer
I am a lecturer in evolutionary biology at the University of Groningen. In the meantime, I am also finishing my PhD in theoretical evolutionary biology at the same university, in which I mostly use computer simulations, mathematical models and advanced statistics to ask questions about genetics, genomics and evolution. I graduated from the MEME Master's program in evolutionary biology (https://evobio.eu) in 2017, through which I got to live, study and conduct research in Groningen, Munich, Harvard and Uppsala. Before that, I completed one year of Master's in Ecology and Evolution at the University of Montpellier.
Listed skills include Zoology, Computational Biology, Ichthyology, R, and 18 others.

University Lecturer
CurrentAs a temporary lecturer at the University of Groningen I teach, coordinate and provide content for courses in evolutionary biology at the Bachelor's and Master's levels. Right now I am just done teaching the 3-week course Evolutionary Processes.
Doctoral Student
CurrentIn my PhD I code computer simulations and solve mathematical models to understand how new species form and how they evolve.
Masters Student
Master's thesis. In this work I collected reflectance data from museum specimens of birds of paradise, and analyzed those data using Bayesian inference and phylogenetics to understand whether plumage color evolved gradually or "by jumps" in this family of birds.
Masters Student
Master's thesis. In this research project I analyzed the coloration of the dewlap of lizards of the species Anolis sagrei from the Bahamas and Cayman Islands, and used multivariate statistics and machine learning to know if lizards tended to have different colors if they lived in different habitats. I also helped with caretaking of captive lizards in the.
Masters Student
Research project. In this work I used whole-genome transcriptomic data to compare patterns of gene expression between populations of the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster. As a small side project, I helped calculate the allele frequencies of an indel polymorphism involved in oxidative stress tolerance (MtnA 3'UTR) across a latitudinal gradient from Africa.
Masters Student
Research project. In this project I conducted simulations of a theoretical model of species diversification, to see if assuming that the formation of new species takes time makes the resulting phylogenetic trees more similar in shape to real-life phylogenies.
Masters Student
Research project. During this work I conducted a MicroCT survey of the development of the ossified skeleton in the Cuban gar (Atractosteus tristoechus). I compared my findings to what I found using more classical Alcian blue/Alizarin red histological staining. On the side, I constructed a phylogeny of genes of the Dlx family to see the relationship between.
